CHÂTEAU DE POUZOLS 1437
The origins of our family at the Chateau de Pouzols can be traced back to the year 1437.
At that time there was a primitive château which was partially destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade by Simon de Montfort, at the start of the 13th Century. One of the four towers of this château remains to this day.
The family then settled into a new château which they built at the top of the village (Le Fort) in the 15th Century.
Jean Escouperier de la Gardie, our ancestor, had the castle rebuilt on its original site.
To it he added vast dependences which are still used to this day. The semi-underground wine cellars date back to this period.
It is here that on 2 January 1660 he entertained King Louis XIV and his mother Anne of Austria with Cardinal Mazarin.

CHÂTEAU DE POUZOLS
Just before the French Revolution, his descendant, Francois de Gaillac rebuilt a more modern, more functional castel, the one we live in today.
The Revolution put paid to his project. He died without issue, naming his nephew, the Baron de Fournas Fabrezan, heir to the de Pouzols property.
For over two hundred years, the Barons de Fournas, have managed their Pouzols vineyards themselves, passing the art of viticulture and the oenological tradition down from father to son.

CHÂTEAU DE POUZOLS
Succeeding his ancestors and his father, Francois-Regis de Fournas, has been cultivating and managing this family property since 1988. His wife, Claire, an agricultural engineer and specialist in oenology is responsible for the vinification and the ageing process of the wines.
« I love the land on which I was born, this land which my ancestors chose to pass on to me over 21 generations. The wine is the expression of this passion for Pouzols which is written in my genes
To work the land and to cultivate each grape as if it were a diamond, to then give a moment of happiness with an elegant, refined wine , is my whole pride... »

Charles, the twenty-second generation, joined the family destiny in 2020. He studied in Bordeaux, in the Cotes du Rhone and in Burgundy and has several vinifications to his credit in Australia and New Zealand where he furthered his training.

« I am also particularly attached to this land, as I have grown up here and this is where my family roots are. Through my wines I would like to express my know-how and my particular focus on this environment surrounding me. »
